Childhood Anxiety

As the mother of a young adult son and two teenage daughters, I feel I have learned a lot about parenting in the last 22 years.  If you were to ask me to identify one of my biggest parenting challenges, I would say combating childhood anxiety.  Anxiety is a real issue from which we cannot shy away.  Between social media and recent breaking headlines, anxiety is all around us.

There are two main approaches to dealing with your child’s anxiety. First, do all you can to avoid triggers and anything that causes the child stress or concern.  Secondly, teach your child that they can overcome anxiety.  Discuss what makes them anxious about a certain activity or situation and help them to navigate the concerns.  Increased confidence can be a real anxiety antidote!

While avoiding triggers is often necessary, the process of working through and overcoming anxiety will greatly help equip children for adulthood.  A child will be less prepared for adulthood if they are unable to cope with stress and anxiety.  I am not advocating that this approach works for every situation. Certainly, there are situations where counseling and professional help are required.

The Bible address fear 365 times. God knows we are dust and that we have fears and stresses. As parents, it is our job to model and point to God as our Help when we are fearful or stressed. Psalm 23:4 is one of many that provides me great comfort during my feelings of anxiety or inadequacy. “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me, your rod and staff comfort me.” Walking our kids through their anxieties with a Biblical mindset will teach them to lean on God as adults. What are your thoughts on childhood anxiety? Share them below.

Thank you for your good suggestions, Mindy. As a parent and now a grandparent, I have seen many changes in culture during the past 50 years. But anxiety-causing factors have always been present even though they may come in different forms. During this time, the child's home as a peaceful and constant haven remains an important factor--a place where children will know they are safe and loved.

There in the home in the presence of a loving parent or parents, the child's anxious thoughts can be diminished through times spent in nearness to mom or dad. These times can be taylored to the interests and personalities of each child, Some children like to romp and roll; others need lap time reading or watching a video. As a parent, it may require discipline to put aside media, ignore phones, etc. so that at least 20-minute periods of time are available for you to provide undivided attention to the activity or conversation with the child.

As the child grows, you are investing in a relationship that they will learn more and more to trust and draw strength from. As they face more complex challenges they will need your support and guidance. I liked your reference to Psalm 23. Here are words and word-pictures a child can understand. Just as the shepherd loves and cares for his or her sheep, so God is our loving Shepherd who provides comfort and protection the child (and parent) can always rely on.
