LESSON DESCRIPTION

Children will see how Ruth respected Naomi by staying with her and helping her. Children will see additional examples of people they should respect in the context of familiar family relationships.

  • Bowl of toy corn on the cob or colorful fruit
  • TV or video viewing device
  • Device for playing audio files

Greet the children and prepare them for the lesson.
2Big Idea

With children seated, introduce the Big Idea with Oscar Ox craft puppet (Optional):

Teacher: “Hello, Oscar Ox. Are you strong?”

Oscar Ox: “I sure am (flexes his arms). Like they say, I’m as strong as an ox!”

Teacher: “Ha! Ha! Then, I’ll bet you can help me lift this bowl of (plastic corn-on-the-cob, plastic fruit, or other food).”

[Act out puppet lifting bowl.]

Teacher: “Thank you, Oscar. You are strong. And you helped me.”

Oscar Ox: “You are welcome. I like to help.”

Teacher: “Today, our story is about how Ruth showed respect by helping Naomi.”

With children seated, use the story review images of Ruth and Naomi.

Teacher: “Did you like the story? Did you see how Ruth helped Naomi? [use pictures to review ways Ruth helped] Ruth stayed with Naomi. Remember, Ruth said, 'Where you go, I will go…' [continue with Ruth 1: 16]. Let’s learn our Bible verse for today: Ruth loved Naomi so much, she followed Naomi to a different country. Ruth said 'Where you go [point in distant direction away from any children], I [point to your heart] will go [point in same distant direction].'”

Repeat with signs.

Allow children playtime to afford them a break from formal teaching while affording the teacher opportunity to teach obedience, sharing of toys, and helping each other to pick up toys.

Serve, if applicable, a snack and [now or later] relate to Ruth and importance of sharing our snacks.

Teacher: “Let’s show God how thankful we are.”

Allow play time as needed.

Teacher: “Thank you for showing respect to us your teacher(s) by listening to us, sharing your toys, and helping pick them up. We can also show respect by loving and obeying other people. Let’s look at how we can show respect in our families.”

Teacher: “Children, I hope you will show respect to your mommies, daddies, and other grownups. Let’s all sing along with the song, 'R-E-S-P-E-C-T.' Let’s sing: 'R-E-S-P-E-C-T, people with authority...'"
