1Welcome
Greet the children and prepare them for the lesson.
2Big Idea

Ask children to be seated and help as necessary. Introduce the Big Idea:

Teacher: “Thank you for obeying and sitting in your chairs. When we obey others, we show RESPECT. Do you know what 'Respect' means? We show respect when we are kind to others."

Allow time for children’s responses or questions.

Teacher: "We obey when we are asked, we help others, and we share our toys with others. Today, we will learn how Ruth respected Naomi, and Naomi respected Ruth even though they were different from each other. Let’s watch a video."

3Video
Show the "Learning About Respect" video on your available TV or device.
4Video Review / Discussion / Takeaway

With children seated, use story review images of Ruth and Naomi.

Teacher: “Did you like the story? Did you see how Ruth helped Naomi (use pictures to review ways Ruth helped)? Ruth showed respect for Naomi by helping her. And Naomi showed respect for Ruth even though she was from a different country.”

Show the cover of Little Leaders Backyard Adventure book with Ruth gleaning and Boaz helping Ruth (if available). Alternate: Use color printed download.

Teacher: “Boaz helped Ruth gather food even though Ruth was from a different land. Do you know what Ruth said? Our Bible verse for today tells us what she said to Boaz (use appropriate signs): Ruth said, 'Boaz, why are you good to me? I am different.'"

Repeat.

Teacher: “Boaz showed respect to Ruth by being kind to her even though she was different.”

5Activity
Distribute the coloring pages and allow the children to color while pointing out key aspects that relate to the story/video.
6Snack / Play Time

Serve, if applicable, a snack (e.g. oat O’s) from grains and [now or later] relate to Ruth.

Teacher: “Let’s show God how thankful we are.”

Give prayer of thanks. Allow play time as needed.

7Video

With children seated, use story review images of Ruth and Naomi.

Teacher: “Do you remember how Ruth showed her love and respect for Naomi by helping her? And how Boaz helped Ruth even though she was different? Let’s learn how we can show respect to others even if they are different.”

Then play “Little Ruth: Respect Part 6” video on your TV or applicable audio device.

8Video Takeaway & Discussion

With Oscar Ox craft puppet (Optional):

Teacher: “Hey, Oscar. We just saw you on TV. You showed respect by sharing your toys and food. Thank you for showing respect.”

Oscar Ox: “You are welcome! I try to be kind to my friends, even when they are different from me.”

Teacher: “Oscar and his friends, Tibo and JoJo, are good examples to us, aren’t they children? Speaking of differences, let’s all stand up and make a circle."

9Activity

With children in a circle:

Teacher: “Now, lets look at how we are all different.”

Teacher helps children see differences in color of hair, eyes, skin; in height, length of hair, color of our clothes.

Teacher: "We are all different but God loves each one of us and we should love and respect each other, even those who are not exactly the same as us."
