Little Leaders and a Tiny Virus

The current threat from the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is on the forefront of our minds. Families are concerned, especially for elderly parents and grandparents who are believed to be more vulnerable. Perhaps less obvious but no less significant is the impact of the Coronavirus threat on our younger children and grandchildren. As adults, we have more mature ways to handle our anxieties. But we are wise to watch for opportunities to comfort and assure our children during times of uncertainty.

Your toddler may be too young to understand the threat from a virus. However, even a toddler can sense mom or dad’s anxiety and become unsettled, too. Parents and grandparents that are attentive to their children or grandchildren, whether they are toddlers or teenagers, are wise to use these opportunities as teachable moments.

Yet, sometimes it can be hard for an adult to relate across generations. Here is where faith-based media like Little Leaders videos can help build a foundation for our children that leads to trust in God. After all, Jesus loves the little children (Matthew 19: 14) and will comfort and protect them.

For example, children can learn that God loved Noah and his family by watching Little Noah. God instructed Noah to build an ark of safety to prepare for a very big flood. How blessed is the toddler who can nestle on mommy’s or daddy’s lap and watch images of Noah’s ark and the animals parading safely on board. Meanwhile, toddlers can learn to sing along with Tibo Tiger and JoJo Giraffe. By learning to sing, “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands,” the toddler can begin to learn what it means to be safe and loved by God while singing within the comforting hands and arms of mommy or daddy.
Even a tiny virus can make us anxious, regardless of our age. But, with God’s help, if we respond in faith and love, we can make a difference when we are attentive to the needs of our children and grandchildren. Our hope is that Little Leaders will continue to be a valuable resource to help make children who are “little today, leaders tomorrow.”

Childhood Anxiety

As the mother of a young adult son and two teenage daughters, I feel I have learned a lot about parenting in the last 22 years.  If you were to ask me to identify one of my biggest parenting challenges, I would say combating childhood anxiety.  Anxiety is a real issue from which we cannot shy away.  Between social media and recent breaking headlines, anxiety is all around us.

There are two main approaches to dealing with your child’s anxiety. First, do all you can to avoid triggers and anything that causes the child stress or concern.  Secondly, teach your child that they can overcome anxiety.  Discuss what makes them anxious about a certain activity or situation and help them to navigate the concerns.  Increased confidence can be a real anxiety antidote!

While avoiding triggers is often necessary, the process of working through and overcoming anxiety will greatly help equip children for adulthood.  A child will be less prepared for adulthood if they are unable to cope with stress and anxiety.  I am not advocating that this approach works for every situation. Certainly, there are situations where counseling and professional help are required.

The Bible address fear 365 times. God knows we are dust and that we have fears and stresses. As parents, it is our job to model and point to God as our Help when we are fearful or stressed. Psalm 23:4 is one of many that provides me great comfort during my feelings of anxiety or inadequacy. “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me, your rod and staff comfort me.” Walking our kids through their anxieties with a Biblical mindset will teach them to lean on God as adults. What are your thoughts on childhood anxiety? Share them below.

Embracing our Inability

When we approach parenting, we focus on our ability to be a parent and how we are going to influence and "cultivate" these little hearts God has entrusted to us. What an incredible responsibility!  If we try to carry this responsibility on our own, we are going to end up frustrated and discouraged. As Paul David Tripp says in his parenting devotional, we need to acknowledge our inability to "change" our kids.

We need to understand that ultimately it is God who will work in their lives, and we are instruments to be used by Him. When we make that admission, a weight is lifted from our shoulders. We are to love, guide, direct and speak truth in our children’s lives and let our mighty God use that to work His transformations.

Children are only lent to us by God for a short while (and my, does it go fast!). We are imperfect parents partnered with a loving God. As I watched my oldest son say his wedding vows, I realized that my parental control has completely transitioned to 100% God control. I trust God and His future plans for my son. As 2 Corinthians 12:9 reminds us, God’s grace is sufficient and made perfect in our weakness. Do you struggle with acknowledgement of inability in your parenting? Feel free to share and comment!

Children and Sports

How much do sports and social activities influence our children? Should we encourage them to compete in organized athletics or allow them to naturally gravitate towards their interests?
I think it is a combination of both. We observe the things at which they are naturally and then encourage them in those directions.
I am a sports mom! I love sports! My kids…well..not so much. They weren't very interested in organized athletic activities in early childhood. Of course, I encouraged them to try various sports so they could decide by high school which one they liked. Athletics can teach teamwork, hard work, training toward a common goal, and how to react to success and failure. These are great life lessons that they will face in adulthood.
I recently read an article about how sports can influence girls to be leaders and innovators as adults. I believe it! Lessons learned on the court, field, track, dance floor, etc are invaluable. Some parents take this to the extreme and trump church attendance with sports activities. This is not the message we should be sending to our kids.
At Little Leaders, we believe that a Biblical foundation, personal relationship with God, and regular church attendance will help equip your child to be a true Leader in whatever God has planned for their future.

Welcome to the Little Leaders blog!   We thought our first blog entry would be a great opportunity to tell you about our company and our mission.
Our History
The Little Leaders Company is a family owned and operated company founded in 2004. We started with a computer, a camera, a sewing machine and a passion for educating and building positive values into the lives of children in their most critical, formative years.

In a market dominated by big studios with big budgets, our little company has survived through hard work, determination, and commitment to our calling.  We believe that there is a bigger purpose for our little company, and we are dedicated to the ongoing process of making a difference in the lives of those who are "Little Today.  Leaders Tomorrow."®

Our Reason
Leaders of conviction and integrity are becoming increasingly rare.  Simply turn on the evening news or check out the latest story trending online, and you're bound to witness the next scandal that continues to erode the perception of those we once admired.  It is more critical than ever that we instill core values and nurture the character of our little ones.  After all, they are the ones who can reshape our world.
Our Mission
Our mission is simple: To provide faith-based developmental products for young children to help build character and educate the leaders of tomorrow.
Why Little Leaders?
Faith-Based: The market is packed with educational material for toddlers.  Your choices are virtually unlimited.  However, Little Leaders offers several unique features.   Our products provide educational content that focuses on character and integrity with a foundation on Old Testament Bible characters.  We expose children to the basic Bible stories at their level while using each story to teach real world skills such as recognizing colors, numbers, animals and more, while encouraging positive values such as respect, sharing and honesty.
Multi-Lingual Content:  Studies show that the toddler years are the perfect time to expose little ones to the sounds and nuances of multiple languages. Each program in the Little Leaders Video Series comes in English paired with at least 3 other languages!
Little Leaders
Motor Skill Development:  Parenting continues to change, and gone are the days when videos are simply babysitters.  Our products are designed to encourage interactivity between child and parent.   Each episode of the Little Leaders Video Series contains companion material in American Sign Language designed to provide a quality educational time with your child while helping to build critical motor skill development.
We invite you to join us in this crucial mission to educate and promote character development in the little ones who will be the leaders of tomorrow.

We would love to hear from you!   Feel free to post a comment.  Tell us what you're doing in this important mission or let us know if Little Leaders has helped make a difference in your life or the life of your little one!

God Bless You!
